What each number means

How many days are in the Ontario school year?

Between 177 and 187 days of class, depending on the school board. That is the number the school board publishes on its own calendar, and it counts only the days students are in school: weekends, statutory holidays, breaks and non-instructional days are all already taken out.

Most run Tuesday, September 8, 2026 to Tuesday, June 29, 2027. Across Ontario the first day falls between Sep 2 and Sep 8, and the last between Jun 26 and Jun 30, so the answer really does depend on which school board you pick.

How many days is winter break?

The calculator gives the run of days off, not the dates printed on the calendar. A break printed as Dec 21 to Jan 1 is longer than that in practice, because the weekend either side is attached to it, and that run is what a family actually plans around.

67 of 70 school boards take exactly the same dates. It also tells you the first day back, which is the thing people usually want in January.

How many days is march break?

Same method: the days off in a row, plus how many of those were school days. 64 of 70 school boards take Mar 15 to Mar 19, and the rest take one of 3 other weeks.

This is the one worth checking rather than assuming: a week out either way is a holiday booked on the wrong days.

How many days is summer break?

Marked as an estimate, because it is the one answer no calendar can give. Summer ends in the next school year, and the 2027-2028 calendars are not published yet.

So the calculator measures how far after Labour Day this school board started this year, and assumes it will do the same next year. It says so on the card rather than presenting a guess as a fact.
